GUILTY AS CHARGED

Why is it so hard to put down that smart phone and just live in the moment? Why can’t we just embrace what’s around us without needing all of that social media, instant gratification, and buzz?

We finally took the plunge and decided to take a much needed family vacation. As I navigated my way through the early part of the the vacation, I found myself reaching for my phone to get my fix, check on my business, and see what’s going on in the world rather than pause.

This would have been a great opportunity to step back from the world and decompress after being trapped at home for 3 plus months with the same routine day in and day out.

But I was guilty as charged, and it was time for action.

SOCIAL MEDIA DISTANCING

I decided to set up some boundaries while on vacation to really be present with my family. My boys (ages 11 & 13) are growing so fast and before I know it they will be grown up and moving out of the house.

Instead of spending time on my business and social media during the peak family hours, I carved out time to do my work and social connecting early in the morning while everyone is still sleeping or late afternoon when everyone is vegging out after a long day at the beach.

I also decided I would leave my Apple Watch at home and my phone in the bag for the majority of the time at the beach and just enjoy what was in front of me.

At first it was hard to distance myself from my phone, social media and focus on the moment. But when I could feel my kids were happy that they had my full attention, it made me feel so good. It was freeing and liberating.

DID SOMEONE SAY SHOTS?

In my prior life, I spent my vacations on laptops and emails answering the corporate calls to action. I was always stressed and unable to disconnect.

Now I get to call the shots! Being an entrepreneur can be the most incredible experience and offers amazing flexibility. I decide the trejectory of my business and how I use my time.

There are still challenges and it’s hard to totally disconnect from my business and social media. When you are leading others and have a strong online presence, you have the need to be connected so you aren’t forgotten.

However, with proper planning it CAN happen. You can run your business and be connected on social media while still maintaining proper boundaries. Just keep reminding yourself it’s okay to disconnect. You need this time with your family.

TIME MANAGEMENT FOR VACAY

Take it All In
  1. Disconnect from the world: Disconnect from your work, social media, etc. for an allotted period of time every day. Vacations are meant to be a break from the routine.
  2. Schedule time for high-priority tasks. If you must work on vacation, “schedule” time that is not during peak family time to get things done.
  3. Delegate tasks. Delegate critical tasks to team members.
  4. Family first. Remember you are on vacation and plan around your family, not the other way around!
  5. ENJOY! Time goes by fast, enjoy it!
