Work-Life Balancing

WELCOME BACK.

After a wonderful week on vacation, I had to ease back into reality. On vacation, my priority was spending quality time with my family. I created a plan to fit my work in during non-peak family hours and focus on my husband and boys. I ended my vacation with a sense of accomplishment knowing I had effectively balanced my work priorities while also enjoying the precious time with my family.

When I sat down and started planning my upcoming work week, I felt swallowed up by a long list of tasks and catch-up work. The warm and fuzzy vacation buzz was quickly wearing off and I immediately felt like all that relaxation and time with family was a distant memory.

Then I stopped myself from the anxiety rush. My internal voice spoke up loud and clear and reminded me that I get to call the shots. I am the boss and I am going to figure out how to transition back to reality and prioritize my key to-do’s in a manner that makes sense. I would not be driven by the false pursuit of perfection and the urge to jump head first back into life away from the beach.

I reminded myself that the happiness I gained from my vacation would not be diluted if laundry doesn’t get done, if the fridge is a little bare or if I am not multi-tasking 100 things at one time.

BALANCING ACT.

So, how do we transition back to “real life” without it being painful or stressful? My first inclination is to turn into a spaz by trying to take on too many responsibilities and fixating on the things that seem like a priority, when, in reality, they are not.

Priority identification and shifting are key to balancing what you NEED to get done versus the activities you WANT to get done.

Creating clear priorities is key and will assist in identifying the immediate goals and tasks that are critical. This, in turn, will also help you manage your limited time and be less stressed.

KEY STEPS IN PRIORITY SHIFTING.

  1. Write a list of all the things you do on a regular basis.
  2. Prioritize your list based on what needs your immediate attention and what can wait until later.
  3. Ask yourself: What do I need to accomplish in the next 24, 48 and 72 hours?
  4. Focus on importance, not urgency.
  5. Delegate when it makes sense.
  6. There’s always tomorrow!
